Chapter 8 She pushed through the crowd and saw Dwayne shielding Sonia in his arms. He blocked the family member’s hand that was about to land on Sonia’s face, while she trembled in his arms, looking extremely pitiful.[] The patient’s family member was obviously intimidated by Dwayne’s imposing presence. “W–Who are you?“] Dwayne pushed her away. “We can always talk things out. There’s no need to get physical.“[] “You don’t know how outrageous she was!” The woman pointed at Sonia angrily. “My son almost died. When she was making rounds, she actually found my son’s wounds disgusting! Is she really a doctor?“] “That’s not what happened…” Sonia shook her head and looked at Dwayne, her eyes red. “Dwayne, I’ve been feeling sick since having breakfast this morning. It has nothing to do with the patient.“[] He nodded. “Leave it with me.“] Then he looked at the woman. “You heard her. It was just a misunderstanding. How about this? I’ll take care of your son’s medical bills.” Hearing this, the woman wasn’t that furious anymore. She nodded, agreeing to let this slide.[] “Some doctor!” she mumbled as she went back to the ward.[] “I’m so sorry, Dwayne. I hate to cause you any trouble,” Sonia said with distress in her eyes. “In fact, you didn’t have to help me at all. What if you got hurt?“[] Dwayne smiled gently, “I’m just glad you aren’t hurt.” “Dr. Frazier, Mr. Lambert is your boyfriend, right?“[] Sonia dipped her head and smiled shyly, “What? No…“[] “Stop denying it. You two are a great match!“[] Everyone nodded and echoed.] Through the crowd, Dwayne’s gaze fell upon Dorothy.[] As she locked eyes with him, her heart ached so much that she couldn’t even breathe.[] Her husband and another woman were a great match.[] It seemed she was the unwanted one here.]

Chapter 7  Dorothy froze for a second before looking at Dwayne with disbelief. “I targeted her?“] He was here to accuse her of targeting Sonia?] “She’s your superior. No matter what, you shouldn’t have embarrassed her in front of so many people,” Dwayne said in a flat tone, as if he was her boss, not her husband.[] Suppressing the great bitterness, Dorothy suddenly chuckled. “In case you forgot, I’m the chief surgeon. Don’t I have the right to ask people to leave the operating room?“] “In case you forgot,” Dwayne smiled mockingly, “I have the right to replace the chief surgeon.“[] His harsh words broke Dorothy’s heart.] But it was fine. She had already applied for a transfer.] He could replace her with whomever he wanted.[] Dwayne continued, “From now on, don’t…” “Mr. Lambert, replace me if you want,” she interrupted him.[] The smile on his face gradually vanished as he stared at her, his gaze deep. She’d only call him “Mr. Lambert” when in public.[] But now, they were alone. And she had never treated him so coldly.[] “What did you call me?“] “Mr. Lambert,” Dorothy replied extremely calmly. “Isn’t that how you want me to call you?“]  His frown deepened. Just as he was about to say something, a nurse ran toward them. “Dr. Acosta, the patient’s family is arguing with Dr. Frazier!“] Before Dorothy could even move, Dwayne had already stridden inside, and all she could see was his retreating figure. She couldn’t help but let out a derisive laugh when she saw how nervous he was. He had never cared about her this much.] The patient’s family was arguing with Sonia outside the ward, and no one knew why. Dorothy rushed over and heard Sonia’s cries] (58)

Chapter 6  Sonia bit her lip. “What can I do to help?“] “Irrelevant people can leave now.” Having observed Sonia’s earlier performance, Dorothy knew Sonia would be nothing but a burden.] ut…] “But “Dr. Frazier, the patient is in a critical condition now. You should go out and calm the family members down.“] None of the attending surgeons in Dewbury Medical Center dared to accept this procedure because their entire careers would be destroyed if anything went wrong. Besides, they had all witnessed Sonia’s performance from the moment she stepped into the operating room.] If it weren’t for her connections, they would have lashed out already.] Clenching her fists, Sonia could only exit the room reluctantly. D After confirming that the patient’s brainstem remained intact and no major vessels were compromised, Dorothy spent five hours removing the steel bar and then performed skull base reconstruction together with the others.]] The surgery was completed till it was dusk. Seeing that all the vital signs of the patient were stable, everyone was relieved. The other doctors told the patient’s family the great news at once. el  Dorothy, however, went to the director’s office. Weston was thrilled when he knew the result. “Dottie, it’s a success all thanks to you.” “Teamwork is what matters, and the patient is lucky enough–the steel bar didn’t hurt any vital areas. Or I’m afraid no one could have saved him.“] Weston nodded and then persuaded her again, “Are you still sure you want the transfer?”  He knew how talented she was. She was the youngest attending surgeon and a woman at that. It was quite impressive.]] Rovigo was a small city, and the hospital benefits there couldn’t compare with those in Dewbury at all. It was such a shame that she gave up all those perks and transferred to Rovigo Hospital. Chapter 5  Dwayne’s expression darkened. It seemed he didn’t expect her to propose a divorce. “No, I won’t agree to that Dorothy was stunned Why? Could it be.] Meanwhile, he continued, “Grandma wouldn’t say yes anyway.“1] Then he closed the door Dorothy stood in place for a long time, stifling. She couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous her speculation was For a fleeting moment, she had actually thought she was the reason he didn’t agree to a divorce But it was simply because he thought Aliyah wouldn’t approve it] Little did he know she had already had Aliyah’s permission]  Dwayne didn’t step into the bedroom again that night. Early the next morning, when the maid, Emma Walsh, came to work, he was already nowhere to be seen. Dorothy had breakfast as usual. After Emma cleaned the rooms and came out, she asked, “Mrs, Lambert, why are so many things missing? Back then, she had thought he seldom smiled.] It was the only photo they took together, and she cherished it a lot. But now, as she looked at it, she just felt ironic.]] It was not like he didn’t smile. It was just that she didn’t deserve his smiles.] She picked up the frame, took one last look at it, and tossed it into one of the paper boxes, leaving it with the rest of the dumped items in the walk–in closet.] As she walked out of the bedroom, she heard sounds coming from the living room. Dwayne was back.]` Walking into the living room, she saw Dwayne hanging his coat on the rack in the entryway and changing his shoes/  Taking a deep breath, she walked toward him. “Don’t you think you owe me some explanation?”  Why did he arrange for Sonia and Brenden to live at Tranquility Apartments, too?  Dwayne loosened his tie and glanced at her, his gaze cold. “About what?] “Tranquility Apartments is close to the hospital. Since you can live here, why can’t they?“] He draped his tie over his elbow and looked at her. “You already have what you want. Don’t push your luck.“] His words broke Dorothy’s heart.]  Was she? Pushing her luck? That made sense. To him, she already schemed her way into being his wife, and targeting Sonia and Brenden indeed seemed she was pushing her luck. Just as Dwayne was going to go back to the room, she stopped him. “Let’s talk.” 0  He stopped in his tracks, turned around a bit impatiently, and looked at her indifferently. “What do you want now?” “A divorce.” She slowly took off her wedding ring and clutched it tightly. “I’m setting you free.”
