Chapter 22 Harold’s POV On Emily and Keith’s wedding day, I was there, giving $100,000 as a gift under a fake name. It might’ve been self–deception, but I’d promised Emily I wouldn’t reappear and disrupt her life. Truth be told, Emily and Keith’s wedding was far grander and more lavish than mine with Emily had been. Flowers, banquet, emcee… Every detail showed how much Keith and his family valued Emily. I can’t help but recall the day Emily and I got married five years ago. The chaotic ceremony, the flower stands and gauze curtains tossed about by the sea breeze, my impatient relatives… Only later did I come to realize that Emily had been enduring things since our wedding day. She endured everything that could go wrong, endured my indifference and coldness, endured my parents‘ nitpicking. Yes, even my own parents disapproved of Emily from the start. They always believed I should marry someone from a similar background- preferably well–educated with a promising future. Sophia’s family background was too humble; though Emily came from a decent family, she was just a high school teacher, unworthy of me–once the hospital’s chief physician. GOO Chapter 22 I wasn’t thinking about any of that back then. My thought was: since it wasn’t Sophia, marrying anyone would do, as long as it seemed suitable. Besides, Emily loved me more intensely than anyone who’d ever claimed to love me. She made it painfully obvious. It made someone like me–who considered himself exceptional–want to test how far she’d bend. Can humans truly sustain lasting love for another? Even without reciprocation, even when neglected, overlooked, hurt. I admit I’m flawed, full of shadows. But in this pragmatic world, my degrees, looks, and talents polished my veneer. I expected this marriage to last three months at best. Yet Emily stubbornly stretched it into five whole years. If I had realized my feelings sooner, stopped testing her limits of ‘loving me‘ again and again, perhaps we’d still be together now–maybe even ‘happily‘ together. Emily was right: men are born with a white knight complex and a fixation on first loves. When I learned Sophia–who’d dumped me after graduation to follow her professor abroad–was struggling in England, I felt satisfied. I thought contemptuously: Serves her right. This is heaven’s punishment for leaving me. So I couldn’t wait to fly to England to ‘give her a hand,‘ to prove her choice had been completely wrong….
Chapter 21 Days slipped by, and Emily’s class faced the National University Entrance Exam again. This time, she went with Keith to Cathedral for the first blessing offering. On New Year’s Day, they arrived early when Cathedral stood nearly empty. Emily asked Keith, “Remember how I looked when we first met?” Keith gazed at her, thinking back carefully. “Your hair was longer then, and you was thinner too. Kneeling there, you looked like a celestial maiden before the saint. I thought to myself, what fate–if I ever got the chance, I had to know her.” Emily shot him a glare. “So you’re saying I’m fat and ugly now?” Keith waved his hands frantically. “That’s not what I meant!” “You must’ve been miserable back then. Oh dear, it broke my heart! I thought, if I could really meet you, I’d make sure you gained ten pounds- plump and healthy, beautifully so.” Making attraction by looks sound so noble. Emily clamped her hand over Keith’s mouth. 0.00%%% Chapter 21 “I won’t have you spouting nonsense before the saint!” 17 Keith squealed and squirmed, his aloof heartthrob image from their first meeting utterly gone. Emily couldn’t help but laugh. In the past, she was used to Harold being gentle to others but cold to her. Now, Keith was gentle, funny, silly, childish, mature, and steady with her, but with others he was distant and politely reserved. Emily thought, this is what love looks like. In front of the one you love, you can be your whole self, no matter what that looks like. Emily and Keith knelt together in the Cathedral, reverently holding the incense high above their heads. This time, besides making a wish for her students, she also made a wish for herself and Keith….
The former mother–in–law’s loud voice carried, and Keith overheard. They exchanged a troubled glance. Harold had always been calm and composed throughout their six–year acquaintance. How could someone so rational–seemingly emotionless–contemplate ending his life? Despite their past, Emily took leave after that call. She’d return to check on him. Keith stopped her while booking tickets, serious, “I’m going back with you.” Afraid she’d refuse, he added, “We’ll take the VIP lane. I’ll drive you straight to the hospital there. Someone will bring my car back later.” With everything arranged, Emily didn’t object. At the hospital, Harold was out of critical condition but lay in the ICU. Emily watched him barely clinging to life through the glass, emotions. tangled in her chest. Then her former mother–in–law approached, wiping tears. “Harold’s a doctor himself. He knew exactly where to strike lethally–it was suicide. The surgeons said even if he pulls through, he’ll never practice medicine again.” Meaning his hands were ruined. 000% Al 26 l Chapter 20 Emily’s heart sank. She could only offer comfort. “Mary, he’s brilliant. Even if he can’t practice medicine anymore…” Her words trailed off, sounding hollow even to herself. Her former mother–in–law was consumed by regret. “This is all my fault. I failed to raise him right, let him become this…. extreme.” “Thank you for still visiting him, Emily. You’re a good girl. I’d hoped… maybe there was still a chance for you two, since he wanted to change. Seems it was just wishful thinking.” Mary grasped Emily’s hands. “I won’t bring this up again. Let bygones be bygones.” “I’ll take Harold away from here. I won’t let him bother you all anymore.” You all? Emily looked back and saw Keith standing there looking utterly pitiful, as if abandoned. She sighed helplessly. After exchanging a few words with Mary, she walked toward Keith….
Chapter 19 Emily was thrown off. “Well, I did dislike you before. You seemed to have zero sense of boundaries or shame.” “But later I realized–it was all Harold’s fault. Had he truly loved you, he wouldn’t have married me and hurt me. Had he truly loved me, he wouldn’t have kept stringing you along and ended up hurting you.” Sophia stayed silent for a long moment before speaking again, her voice choked up- “I get what you’re saying. Thanks.” “And… sorry.” Emily couldn’t tell how much sincerity lay behind Sophia’s gratitude and apology. Yet over Harold, two strangers had turned rivals, settled their differences, and walked away. Sighing, irony, sorrow… Emily made a silent vow: never again would she recklessly give her whole heart to any man. Because love makes you lose all reason. Staring at the number showing a five–minute call duration, Emily ultimately didn’t block it. Instead, she saved the contact name: Sophia. 0.00% 01.26 Chapter 19 That night, whether from exhaustion or true peace of mind. Emily slept deeply. The next morning, she didn’t hear Keith’s numerous calls. In her sleep, Emily felt a burning gaze. Her eyes snapped open to find a magnified handsome face, startling her into panic. Instinctively, she hurled a pillow at him. Keith yelped in pain, jolting Emily fully awake. Only then did she realize it was her own Buckwheat Hull Pillow–notably heavy. “Are you hurt?” Emily tensed up. Keith sat half–slumped on the floor, his broad palm pressed tightly against one cheek. He didn’t respond. Growing worried, Emily leaned closer to check where he’d been hit….
Chapter 18 Hearing this, Emily suddenly burst out laughing again. This time, she doubled over clutching her stomach, tears welling at the corners of her eyes. Keith grew annoyed. Gripping Emily’s arm, he said through gritted teeth, “Why laugh again? I’m dead serious–took me forever to muster the courage.” Emily watched his cheeks puffing with irritation, finding it utterly endearing. She straightened up solemnly. “After we return, come adopt a puppy with me. You seem experienced.” Keith pointed at himself. “Me?” “Yep.” Emily reined in her smile and gave a firm nod. Keith furrowed his brows slightly, half–doubting. “You serious?” Emily was about to speak when a familiar teacher approached them. “Emily, Keith, what’s got you two so cheerful?” His booming voice instantly drew attention from other teachers, and soon a crowd gathered. 01 26 Chapter 18 A buzz of overlapping voices filled the air. “Heard you two just had dinner together? What’d you cat? Candlelit dinner?” “Meant to ask–did you get along driving here? Want me to swap seats with Emily for the ride back?” To this question, Emily and Keith responded in unison. J “Not necessary.” As she spoke, Emily and Keith exchanged a glance, seeing a smile in each other’s eyes. The other teachers, seeing this, started teasing even more raucously. Emily couldn’t handle this kind of situation. She pushed Keith into the crowd, swiftly turned, closed the door, all in one smooth motion….
Chapter 17 The tension between the two men crackled like drawn swords, poised to erupt at any moment. Emily quickly tugged at Keith’s sleeve, signaling him not to argue with Harold–it was pointless. Keith glanced back at her, his voice softening with reassurance. “It’s fine. Don’t worry. I’m here. I’d never let your ex–husband bully you!” Harold watched their subtle exchange, his face paling further. He swayed unsteadily, barely keeping his balance. “Emily… is this why you refused to reconcile with me?” Emily couldn’t fathom what had set Harold off, why he’d suddenly become a different person. The obsessive intensity in his eyes now frightened her. She couldn’t help but recall what her former mother–in–law had said: “Harold is stubborn; he won’t stop until he gets the answer he wants.” At this moment, Keith spoke again. “Harold, don’t falsely accuse Emily just because you can’t have your way. Emily and I only met three days ago. We came to eat together because we’re partners for this workshop.” “Her refusal to reconcile with you isn’t some childish tantrum or revenge -it’s a carefully considered decision.” 0125) 2 Chapter 17 He paused, his smile carrying an inexplicable hint of wickedness. “Besides, you’ve been divorced for half a year. Isn’t it normal for her to have several suitors?” “In this world, you’re not the only one who appreciates her. You were just luckier than us–you caught her eye earlier.” Upon hearing this, Harold’s face turned completely ashen. He didn’t bother to argue with Keith and took a step straight toward Emily. “Emily, you’ve liked me for six years, can you really just let it go? I know what you care about now. I won’t cross social boundaries with any other woman again. I won’t ignore or neglect you anymore.” He spoke urgently, “I know you’re allergic to daisies, that you’re lactose intolerant. I agree to you keeping cats and dogs at home. I won’t force you to match my schedule anymore. I won’t make you give one–sidedly for me…” Emily couldn’t take it anymore. “Enough!”…
Chapter 16 As a literature teacher, Emily instantly grasped the meaning, her cheeks flushing crimson. She couldn’t bring herself to meet those expressive peach blossom eyes anymore. Keith held her gaze, pressing his advantage. “Emily, I know you divorced Harold. So everything you ever doubted was true. None of those coincidences were accidents–they were opportunities I created to meet you, to spend time with you.” He paused, ready to lay all his cards on the table. “This restaurant? Actually owned by my mom. She said if I ever found someone special, I should bring them here.” “So if you feel I’ve crossed the line, if my calculated approach makes you uncomfortable–after dinner I’ll take you back to the hotel. Then I’ll disappear from your life. No more disturbances.” At this, Emily fell silent. After a long pause, she finally looked at Keith. “What about your mother?” Keith froze, his peach–blossom eyes dimmed with sadness. “That year’s first blessing offering… I meant it for her when she was gravely ill.” “I think meeting you was her final gift to me. O 01.25 Chapter 16 Emily’s voice dropped to a whisper. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know…” Keith gave a wry smile. “Why apologize? It’s not your fault.” He added gently, “My apologies. I shouldn’t have brought it up and made you uncomfortable.” They locked eyes, both suddenly chuckling at the shared awkwardness. Who ever heard of two people who just met apologizing to each other during their first meal together? In the end, Keith took the initiative. “Let’s eat before it gets cold. You can take some home later if you like.” Emily nodded. The meal started with minor awkwardness but turned surprisingly pleasant. Keith taught physics–a typical science guy. Yet his mother happened to be Emily’s favorite author….
