After the gathering wound down, Shawn stayed behind to help me clean up.
As he carried the trash outside, Shawn finally spoke up.
“Regina, let me take care of you.”
His gaze held the same tender focus as three years ago.
My pulse skyrocketed, cheeks flushing hot.
I stammered, “Let me… let me settle things completely first.”
Shawn’s entire face lit up like a lovestruck boy. He swept me into his arms and lifted me into the air with a joyful laugh.
I was both thrilled and a little panicked, laughing and screaming under the streetlights late at night.
The commotion drew a furious roar from the streetlight’s glow. I turned my head–and froze.
It was Kenneth.
He looked furious, murderous even, like he could plunge a knife into someone at any second.
I stared at him calmly and asked, “So, have you made up your mind? When are we finalizing the divorce?”
Kenneth’s eyes burned crimson, each word grinding out through clenched teeth.
“You really don’t trust me at all, do you?”
I almost laughed. When everyone else always came first, how could I possibly trust him?
He turned his hostility toward Shawn, glaring and demanding. “Who is he?”
I stopped Shawn from answering and shook my head.
“It’s none of your business. So? When are we getting the divorce certificate?”
Kenneth had been searching for me for over half a month, and he hadn’t had a proper night’s sleep.
And now that he finally found me, I was standing here with another man.
His blood felt like it was rushing backward, rage driving him to the edge of madness.
He snapped, blurting out, “Ha… Regina, I didn’t think you’d move on so fast. My mom was right–you’re poison! I
must’ve been blind-”

“Shut up!”
Shawn stepped forward and threw the first punch.
They were on each other in an instant–blows flying, each punch landing with brutal force.

I was panicking, trying to separate them. When I finally forced them apart during a moment’s pause, I turned and slapped Kenneth across the face–hard.
He stood there stunned, tears welling in his eyes.
“You hit me… for him?”
“Yes.”
Not just for Shawn–but for myself too.
For all the humiliation and pain I had endured these past few years.
Just seeing me interact with another man had him acting like this.
How was I supposed to feel when I saw him in bed with another woman?
He never understood, never cared. All he ever acknowledged was his own suffering.
Kenneth stared blankly at me, his mouth twitching.
He kicked his luggage aside in a fit of anger.
His voice came out bitter and hoarse. “I can’t believe I actually considered giving everything up for you. I was a fool. You’re not worth it!”
He furiously wiped away his tears, pulled out the divorce papers, and signed them.
“Tomorrow. Civil Affairs Bureau.”
And with that, he tossed the documents down and stormed off.
Shawn placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. I turned to him and assured him softly, “I’m fine.”
The next morning, I waited for Kenneth at the Civil Affairs Bureau. He showed up two hours late, his face ice–cold.
The entire process, he didn’t say a single word.
As we stepped out, going our separate ways, he suddenly called out to me.
“Regina, you really don’t regret this?”
His controlled tone couldn’t mask the tremor.
I didn’t turn back. I didn’t answer.
After a two–second pause, I walked away briskly.

I was so happy to feel regret.

Shawn’s car was waiting at the curb. He waved at me with a bright smile.
“Regina! Over here!”
I smiled back. My steps felt lighter than air as I walked toward him.
