Chapter 1
Recently, my son became obsessed with learning Italian.
te and my husband started whispering in Italian at home, shutting me out completely.
wanted to surprise them, so I secretly began teaching myself Italian. All so that one day, I could join their world.
Until that day when I finally understood their secret-
Dad, Aunt Zoe is pregnant. When can we bring her home? I want her to be my mom!”
Any day now. I’ll bring her over and have your mother take care of Aunt Zoe until your little brother is born.”
The next day, I bought a one–way ticket and left that house with the child in my belly.
Sater, when that father and son came crying and begging for me to return, I simply replied in fluent Italian: “My baby and I no longer need your so–called ‘love.“”
“Zoe’s back, and she’s pregnant.”
One morning, my husband Mason Anderson announced this like he was reading the weather forecast. “I’m thinking of having her move in with us.”
I ate my breakfast in silence, offering no response.
I knew Mason Anderson and his entire family despised me.
After our wedding. I never saw his parents again–because his blue–blood parents couldn’t stomach a country girl from the outskirts of Mississippi.
And Mason’s heart? It never truly belonged to me.
The only reason I married into the Anderson family was because some self–proclaimed “spiritual advisor” from the Fennessee mountains claimed I was perfect Anderson wife material. Said I’d bring wealth and fortune to their bloodline.
Mason’s parents looked down on me, yet they bought every word this spiritual advisor fed them. They practically forced Mason and me into marriage.
My life had been cold and hopeless until my son Carson Anderson was born.
He’s six now–brilliant and charming like a Disney protagonist come to life.

Chapter 1
Recently, he started learning Italian, and he’s picking it up fast.
He and Mason whisper in Italian around the house, like they’re running some exclusive two person secret society.
At first, I felt proud–my son was so smart he’d impressed even his father.
I thought this might buy me a little more time in this house.
Until I started secretly learning Italian myself.
Word by word, sentence by sentence, I decoded their secret.
And piece by piece, my heart turned to ice.
I discovered Carson wasn’t learning Italian for school-
He was learning it to impress Zoe.
The woman Mason never got over.
Zoe Freeman. Mason’s first love. They’d studied together at Bocconi University in Italy, inseparable and head–over–heels for each other.
But Mason’s ultra–religious, old–school parents refused to let her become his wife.
Not because she’d done anything wrong, but because that spiritual advisor told them Zoe wasn’t fit to be “the future mistress of the Anderson family.”
So here I’ve been, trapped in this loveless marriage for seven years.
Everything built on some guru’s prophecies and crystal ball readings.
I was lost in thought when Mason’s fork scraped against his plate, the sharp sound yanking me back to reality.
Just because I’d been quiet a little longer than usual, he was already frowning with impatience.
“Did you hear what I said? Zoe’s moving in, and we’re going to take care of her.”
His eyes locked onto mine, loaded with warning: *Don’t make a scene. She’s pregnant.*
Right. Pregnant women need special care.
Funny how nobody remembered that when I was carrying Carson.
Back then, only the baby mattered–I was never considered a “person” from start to finish.
I nearly bled out in the delivery room.

Mason didn’t even ask if I was okay.
As long as Carson was born healthy, he couldn’t care less if I lived or died.
I nodded without asking whose baby Zoo was carrying
In the past, it Zoe had dared come within a mile of this house, I would’ve lost my mind and started a screaming match with him.
Mason would just watch coldly, like I was some pathetic sitcom character.
But now, after understanding those Italian conversations,
I felt nothing at all.
“I’ll move out for a while,” I said. “Give her space for a peaceful pregnancy,”
Mason looked stunned.
Carson, not quite processing the situation, was already flushed with excitement: “If Mom moves out, does that mean I can see Aunt Zoe every day?”
Even the smartest kid can’t hide that kind of joy.
Mason studied me like he was trying to figure out if I had some new “scheme” brewing,
For a split second, I saw him frown, something unreadable flickering in his eyes–surprise, maybe, or was it…
dissatisfaction?
What could he possibly be dissatisfied about? What else hadn’t I done to please him?
I knew Zoe and the child she was carrying were all that mattered to him.
Mason’s voice softened: “The house is big enough. You don’t need to move out.”
“But we have that place in Sonoma–I’ll put it in your name.”
“You can go there and… sort through your thoughts.”
I got the message.
This was my reward for “playing nice,”
He was afraid I’d disrupt his perfect little family of three, so he wanted me far away to make room for his dream
household.
He was willing to generously gift me an entire villa as long as I stayed out of the way

It made me wonder-
Once the baby in my belly is born, will he be even more generous?
After all, this time, I can say with absolute certainty-
Mason Anderson has absolutely nothing to do with this child.
