Chapter 8
stayed at a hotel for three days.
pulled out my SIM card and deleted all my social media apps.
Three days of complete numbness.
When I finally left the hotel, I felt like my eyes couldn’t even focus anymore.
called a cab and went to Chase’s place.
The lawn was littered with torn red carpet, and the wedding decorations had been ripped down and crumpled on the ground.
The penthouse was empty, with signs of destruction everywhere.
The couch was overturned, shattered glass from vases covered the floor.
learly, Chase had taken his rage out on the place.
tiptoed upstairs and started packing my things.
Most of my belongings had been bought by Chase, so after leaving those behind, I didn’t have much to take.
One suitcase was enough.
As I came downstairs with my luggage, I locked eyes with Chase, who was sprawled on the living room floor.
His hair was disheveled, his clothes wrinkled and messy.
A cigarette dangled between his fingers. He took a drag, then stubbed it out on the floor.
hat sharp, striking face was shrouded in wispy white smoke, giving him a beautifully decadent and absurd appearance.
My breath caught, and I quickened my pace down the stairs.
Don’t go…”
is I passed him, he spoke in a low, hoarse voice.
didn’t stop walking,
I said don’t go!”
le roared.
le scrambled to his feet and caught up to me in a few strides.
le kicked my suitcase aside and grabbed my shoulders, spinning me around to face him.

He bent down and kissed me with overwhelming force.
The bitter taste of alcohol and cigarettes invaded my mouth through his saliva. I struggled frantically.
It was useless.
Tears of desperation streamed down my face, and the moment he pulled back, I slapped him hard across the face.
“Chase! Get the hell away from me!”
Chase slowly turned his face back, his eyes dangerous.
The next second, he hoisted me up and threw me over his shoulder.
He carried me all the way to the bedroom, ignoring my pounding fists.
I was thrown onto the red bed.
While I was still dizzy, he stripped off his jacket and pinned me down.
His cheeks were flushed red from alcohol.
His pale fingers wiped away the tears from my eyes.
He said hoarsely, “Vivienne, what rich guy doesn’t cheat? I’m not a saint.
You shouldn’t have blown this out of proportion and ruined our wedding, ruined what we had.
Yeah, I said I couldn’t stay faithful just for you.
But I also said I love you deeply, that you’re the only woman I want to marry. I’d cherish you and grow old with you.
Why are you pretending you didn’t hear that part?”
ears poured out of my eyes.
low could I have fallen for someone like this!
glared at him with humiliation and hatred. “Chase, you disgust me! You make me sick!
Let me go! I don’t want to see you!”
hase frowned with displeasure.
fter a long moment, he pulled at the corner of his mouth in a twisted smile.
Once you’re pregnant with my child, you won’t be so eager to leave me anymore.
Vivienne, let’s have a baby…”
ly blood turned to ice.

As he pressed his full weight down on me, I struggled desperately.
“Chase?”
A man’s voice suddenly called from outside.
It was repeated several times–Griffin Hale.
“Chase, which room are you in? Say something! Your mom’s been blowing up my phone!”
Chase froze for a moment.
I seized that instant to break free from under him with all my strength, running barefoot across the cold floor.
As I rushed out of the bedroom, I collided with Griffin at the doorway but didn’t stop.
I reached the living room and glanced back.
Once I confirmed Chase wasn’t following, I grabbed my suitcase and ran outside without looking back, diving into my car.
I floored the gas pedal and sped away for several hundred yards before finally slowing down, my heart still pounding.
