The Last Time 21

Chapter 21

Evelyn let out a soft, bitter laugh.

There was a time when Leonard had desperately wanted a divorce. Now that it was real, he couldn’t seem to accept it.

“Whether you sign or not, the paperwork is already filed,” she said calmly, then tugged gently on Daniel’s arm. “Let’s go.”

“Stop right there!”

Leonard’s temper flared like a struck match.

What he couldn’t stand the most was this-her indifference. And worse, seeing her walk away with another man.

He reached out to grab her arm, fingers just about to touch her sleeve-when his wrist was suddenly seized by another

hand.

The man’s movement wasn’t rushed, even graceful, but his grip was impossibly strong. Despite being a seasoned soldier, Leonard couldn’t break free.

“Sir,” Daniel said, his voice steady but firm, “laying hands on a woman isn’t appropriate.”

Leonard’s pupils contracted. He instinctively tried to wrench his wrist free, only to find the grip was locked at just the right angle to neutralize his strength.

“Let go!” Leonard barked, forcing his weight forward.

Daniel’s brow furrowed slightly. With a subtle twist of the wrist and a soft shove, he redirected the pressure.

Leonard’s arm went numb. His balance gave way, and he stumbled three steps backward before he managed to steady

himself.

By now, a small crowd had gathered. A few older women with grocery bags were whispering among themselves, glancing back and forth between the unfamiliar man and Evelyn.

One of them, recognizing her, called out, “Evelyn, who is this man?”

“Just someone I used to know,” she replied mildly.

The crowd, sensing tension, didn’t pry further.

Leonard was seething, but his gaze now lingered on Daniel with something more than anger-suspicion. “You military?”

he asked, his voice low. “With moves like that, you’ve had serious training.”

Daniel let go and casually brushed the pocket of his work shirt. “Nah. Maintenance team at the plant.”

Then he added, coolly, “We did have some security training though. Harassing women is illegal, even in uniform.”

“Harassing?” Leonard snapped. “She’s my wife! Since when is looking for your wife harassment? Who the hell are you to

get involved?”

“You done?”

Evelyn finally spoke again, her voice edged with quiet exhaustion. “We’re divorced, Leonard. This behavior? This is

harassment.”

“I never agreed to ill he shot back, stepping toward her again, eyes locked on her face y parents adore you You thank

this is fair to them?”

His words were sharp as ice, chilling the air around them.

“I never forgot how kind your parents were to me.”

She paused, voice softening, but each word struck with clarity. “But I can’t live like this anymore. Yin letting you go,

Leonard. You and Lillian.”

Evelyn turned and walked away.

Leonard moved to follow her, but Daniel stepped into his path, calm but firm “Captain Grant,” he said, “Evelyn told you the truth. I’ve seen the divorce papers myself. Everything’s official Continuing this will only hurt your reputation”
