Chapter 24 Go Back Home

Sadie twirled the jar of Splendor Balm in her hands, her lips curling up

It seemed that she had won the gamble that night

Zephyr, at his core, was someone who deeply valued family ties

He was the eldest among his siblings, so he was always protective of his younger brothers. Thus, he was disgusted by the actions of the Francis siblings and had begun to feel a hint of pity for her..

Even the slightest hint of sympathy from a person of his status was enough to make her stay

Sadie lowered her gaze, scooping out a generous amount of the balm. She then leisurely smeared it onto her chilblains

In the blink of an eye, it was already the end of the year

The academy was out, and Madison had returned from the coffin home to the Gates Estate, so the atmosphere was lively

Due to Eleanor’s illness, Talulla was still the one managing the affairs and gifts in the Gates Estate

The elderly woman patiently guided Sadie, teaching her bit by bit. She learned how to manage the servants, win over people’s hearts, keep track of accounts, and organize banquets. All these intricate details were essential skills for a lady of a prestigious household

Sadie was unsure if she would ever get married in the future or if she would ever need to use these skills

Nonetheless, she was willing to learn earnestly

By the time the new year came around, the Gates Estate was bustling with guests who came to pay their respects daily. Talulla kept Sadie by her side, encouraging her to mingle and interact with the ladies, both young and bld

After they had lunch, they began setting up a stage for a play in the backyard. Sadie went to assist Talulla in changing her clothes

Talulla said gently, In the world of politics, the alliances and actions of various families can be discerned through their wives and daughters. So, my dear, don’t underestimate the social interactions we’ve had these past few days.”

Sadie seemed thoughtful, pausing for a moment before saying, I heard that Mr. Hubbard was dismissed from his military position by Zephyr before the new year. Today, his wife came to visit with their daughter, bringing generous gifts. They must be hoping that you could speak on their behalf to Zephyr so that Mr. Hubbard could be reinstated. I noticed their daughter is of marriageable age, and his wife kept m that Zephyr lacks someone by his side to take care of him. Could it be that she’s thinking”

oning

Indeed.Talulla gave her an approving glance. However, Marvin Hubbard’s embezzlement of military funds is something Zephyr just won’t stand for. Therefore, we cannot accept their gifts or their daughter. Right now, they’re still waiting in/Blossom Hall. Could you possibly handle them for me, Sadie?”

Sadie understood that Talulla was intending to test her social skills and character

She bowed respectfully. I’m more than willing to ease your worries, Grandmother.”

As Agnes escorted Sadie out, she chuckled and said in a casual tone, Truthfully speaking. Mr. Hubbard had served the Old Duke for twenty years, repeatedly accompanying him through life and death, so he is indeed! loyal. But with age, he became muddled and embezzled twenty thousand silver coinsworth of military pay. Thankfully, Lord Zephyr considered his past contributions and covered the deficit out of his own pocket, even sparing his life.”

Upon hearing Agneswords, Sadic understood that she was subtly advising Sadie not to make things too difficult for Marvin’s wife and daughter

She expressed her gratitude, Thank you, Agnes.”

Agnes watched Sadie leave with an approving look before turning back to attend to Talulla

Talulla was seated on her couch. This girl, SadieFirst, she saved Alexander, then she has been nothing but respectful and attentive to me, always trying to please me. I genuinely like her. If she is nurtured properly. there’s no reason she can’t marry into a prestigious family in the future.”

Agnes sighed. It’s just a shame that she comes from humble origins. At the end of the day, she’s not The Duke’s biological daughter.”

At Blossom Hall

Zephyr had initially come to Pine Manor to inform Talulla that Madison had already returned to the coffin home

However, when he passed by one of the corridors, he noticed Marvin’s wife and daughter seated in Blossom Hall

He knew what was going through the minds of this motherdaughter duo, so he didn’t stop. He was about to keep moving forward when he heard the familiar sound of footsteps echoing from behind the screen

He looked over

Surprisingly, it was Sadie who came out to greet Marvin’s wife and daughter

He knew that from the end of the year till the start of the new year, Sadie had been consistently learning about life and how to interact with people from his grandmother

Yet, he had no idea how well she had learned

In Blossom Hall, Sadie turned her gaze toward Marvin’s wife and daughter

Corliss, Marvin’s daughter, was a delicate and dainty beauty, shyly hiding behind her mother as Sadie entered

With a smile on her face, Bedelia, Marvin’s wife, asked, Miss Francis, is Lady Talulla still refusing to see us?”

Sadie said, Grandmother is taking her afternoon nap.”

Thenthen we’ll wait until she wakes up before we approach her to greet her.”

Sadie gave a quick glance at the pile of gifts that the mother and daughter had brought. In a gentle voice

she said, Grandmother cares deeply for Miss Hubbard. Before she went to sleep, she asked me to tell you that you should take these valuable gifts back with you.”

Bedelia and Corliss exchanged glances

They were unwilling to give up just like that and wanted to say something more, but Sadie then added, Oh right, Grandmother recently acquired a new jade pendant. She asked me to present it to Miss Hubbard ont her behalf.”

Katy presented the jade pendant to Bedelia and Corliss

it was a sleek, translucent round jade pendant with the word homecarved on the back

The message was clear: Corliss was kindly asked to return back home. There was no need for her to become Zephyr’s concubine

Corlissface flushed red, and she appeared very upset. Mother”

Zephyr wasn’t interested in her

Trembling slightly, Bedelia accepted the round jade pendant, ultimately too intimidated to voice her thoughts. All she could do was stammer her gratitude, Please help us thank Lady Talulla for her kindness…

At this point in the conversation, both mother and daughter understood that there was no changing Marvin’s dismissal and that Zephyr had no intention of taking Corliss as a concubine. With no other options, they expressed their gratitude once more before leaving with the gifts they had brought
