Chapter 28 I Will Handle Your Marriage
There was a brief silence at the dining table.
Kendrick was utterly clueless, completely unaware of what they were talking about. He was just there. blissfully devouring his roast chicken, oil dripping from his mouth with every bite.
Lyndal Francis, Kendrick’s mother, looked thoughtful for a moment. Then, possibly realizing that Sadie was now a part of the Gates family, she couldn’t help but look at Sadie with anticipation.
Sadie didn’t touch the piece of meat that Oliver had placed on her plate, maintaining her warm and friendly demeanor. “Oliver, your words are inappropriate. How can we discuss my marriage when our elder brothers are still unmarried and our sister has not yet been wed?”
Neville bared his teeth in a grin. “Aren’t we just looking out for you? Sadie, you’d better appreciate our concern!”
“But you’ve always taught me that Daisy, being frail and sickly since childhood, should always be the first to receive any good things. So, if this marriage is such a great opportunity, I should definitely let her have it, right?
Oliver’s expression turned dark. “Sadie!”
Sadie chuckled, her eyes shining with
musement.
Even Oliver himself knows that this marriage is an absolute disaster.
He can’t bear to see Daisy suffer even a little, yet he doesn’t mind pushing me into the pit.
She put down her cutlery, a pitiful look in her eyes as she turned toward Quincy at the head of the table. “Father, do you also want me to marry Kendrick? But I still want to speak highly of you in front of The Duke. If I get married, I’m afraid I won’t have the chance to say good things about you anymore. Then what about your career…”
Quincy had originally been contemplating this marriage proposal as well.
Having Sadie marry his simple–minded nephew and care for him for the rest of her life could be seen as him fulfilling the bond of sibling love between him and his sister, Lyndal.
However, upon hearing Sadie mention his career prospects, Quincy didn’t even need to think twice. He immediately made a choice between his sibling bond and his career path.
He sternly said, “There’s no need for chatter during mealtimes. Just enjoy your food. Why all this fuss? I’ve got my own plans for Sadie’s marriage, and I don’t want to hear another word about it from any of you!”
Sadie saw the annoyance on Oliver’s face and curled her lips into a small smile.
News of what happened at the Francis Estate was quickly reported to Talulla by the maids brought over.
Talulla was furious. “They actually want to marry you off to a fool?”

As it was still early January, there was a thin layer of frost clinging to the decorated windows early that morning. The table was laden with gilded fruit trays brimming with dried fruits, candy, and beef jerky,

Hearing this, she laughed and said, “Thank goodness my father didn’t agree.
Talulla let out a scoff.
If a child isn’t taught, it’s the father’s fault.
If the Francis family could produce three brothers of such character, I doubt Quincy is any good either.
However, since Sadie was still Quincy’s daughter, it wasn’t appropriate for Talulla to speak so badly of him in her presence. Thus, she simply said, “I’ll send a message to the Francis family. I’ll personally handle your marriage matters.”
“What marriage matters?”
Zephyr happened to come over to say good morning. As he casually handed his cloak to a maid, he offhandedly asked the question.
Talulla briefly explained the situation regarding the Francis family. Suddenly, she asked, “By the way, are there any eligible bachelors in your High Court, Zephyr? I remember you having a few close friends from the military who are of high birth and both talented and handsome, correct?”
Zephyr paused for a moment, then asked, “Grandmother, are you considering a marriage proposal for Miss Francis?”
“Sadie is fifteen this year, which isn’t too early to start considering marriage prospects. I was thinking we could start looking around, take our time to find a good match. Do you know anyone suitable?”
Zephyr glanced at Sadie.
The glow of the snow filtered through the windows, illuminating the room. Sadie sat there, her figure bathed in a soft, pure light.
She was dressed in a dark purple gown that day, a color usually associated with seriousness, yet it made her look exceptionally serene and graceful. The golden clasp was fastened at the top. The silver butterfly hairpin, a staple in her hair, was still tucked neatly beside her bun. A small braid, adorned with a red string, hung down on one side, adding a touch of playful charm to her elegance.
She was practicing her calligraphy.
The unfolded paper displayed dainty penmanship, reminiscent of the intricate branches of a tree – just like her. Beneath her obedient and docile exterior, she concealed a hint of cool resilience.
Judging solely by her appearance, Sadie was actually quite a good catch.
However…
Zephyr smiled gently and replied, “Grandmother, my friends are all from prestigious families. Even if they were willing, I fear their mothers would not approve of Miss Francis joining their housel After all, Miss Francis is not actually a member of the Gates family. In my opinion, if you truly wish to find a match for Miss Francis, perhaps you should consider someone from a humbler background. Their status might not be as high, but it would be a suitable match for her.”
As soon as he finished speaking. Talulla sharply rebuked, “Though Sadie isn’t a member of the Gates family by blood, I now consider her as my own granddaughter! What, do you think she’s not good enough for your

friends, Zephyr? Since when did you start having class prejudices?”
Zephyr didn’t expect such a strong reaction from his grandmother.
Talulla was greatly upset by him, and she demanded, “Do you think Sadie isn’t good enough for them.
Zephyr didn’t want to upset his grandmother, so he lowered his eyes, his voice insincere as he said, “She’s good enough.”
Talulla questioned him again, “Then do you think Sadie is beautiful?”
