Chapter 53
Alexander burst out laughing like a true psychopath in front of Sergio’s lifeless body, whose eyes were wide open. He moved closer to him and made a gesture I couldn’t quite see.
“I knew you’d try to double–cross me. You’re so predictable.”
He put his hand in his pocket while laughing loudly.
“At least now I’m sure you’ll really shut the hell up.”
How can someone laugh in front of a corpse? What’s wrong with this man? What was that conversation? Why so much mystery between them? What did Sergio know that Alexander didn’t want him to reveal?
I was about to turn around and head quietly to the car when Alexander stood right in front of me, his gun pointed at my face.
As soon as his eyes met mine, his laughter stopped immediately, and he put on a neutral expression. His gaze was so cold and intense that it turned my stomach.
I had been about to kill Sergio, but I never would have laughed in front of his corpse.
He lowered his weapon, then gave me a small smile.
“I thought you were one of Sergio’s men.”
That comment was supposed to reassure me, but it freaked me out even more. I was truly beginning to doubt Alexander’s mental stability.
He stepped aside to give me a view of Sergio’s body.
“He tried to attack me. I had no choice but to kill him.”
He’s lying.
If he knows I overheard a crucial part of his conversation with Sergio and that I saw him murder him in cold blood, he’ll kill
- me.
“In the end, you got what you wanted.”
“I thought we weren’t supposed to kill him.”
“He didn’t leave me any choice. We should leave before his men show up.”
I just realized. He manipulated me earlier. Everything he said was just to stop me from killing Sergio, because he wanted to talk to him first–before killing him with his own hands.
It was never about protecting us from mafia retaliation. Everything was calculated and planned so that Sergio would survive until he could take care of it himself.
“How did he manage to attack you when he hasn’t moved since I left?”
He frowned and clenched his jaw.
“You wanted him dead. He is. Be happy.”

“Why did you stay alone with him? You could’ve followed me when I walked out.”
“Let me remind you, I’m not your enemy. Cut the questions and insinuations.”
He lied so well I might have believed him–if I hadn’t just witnessed the scene that opened my eyes to his true face.
“I’m just asking.”
I must not arouse his suspicions.
“Let’s go,” Alexander said to me.
I headed for the exit, followed very closely by Alexander this time. I handed him the car key. He got in on the driver’s side and I on the passenger’s.
“Where are we going?”
“To France.”

I opened my eyes, shocked. We had come to retrieve weapons we hadn’t even touched, and now he wanted to leave Italy to go back home.
“And your weapons?”
I thought I saw a hint of surprise in his eyes when I said the word “weapons“. He quickly turned his gaze back to the road.
“Forget the weapons.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Forget them? Let me remind you, we came for that.”
“I don’t care. All I want now is to return to France. Don’t bust my balls and drop it.”
I understood everything. It was all fake. The weapons were just a pretext to come to Italy. There was never any real merchandise to pick up.
Alexander played me like a fool. He wanted to come to Rome for something else, and I have the feeling it was related to Sergio.
He made me pass as his wife for some unknown reason. All that crap about us needing to stay discreet was probably just to stop me from asking too many questions or digging into him.
His story about rival gangs might have been partly true, but he must have lied about some details.
He’d been using me from the beginning of this trip.
Why bring me along here? If he wanted to handle personal business, he could’ve come alone.
Alexander killed Sergio because he knew too much. If he realizes I picked up on part of his lies, the same thing could
happen to me.
“Aren’t you disappointed to leave without your weapons?”
I faked indifference so he wouldn’t notice my suspicions.

“I just want to go home.”
“So you’re canceling your transaction?”
“It’s not a problem.”
“I risked my life like an idiot for nothing, is that it?”
He turned his head and gave me a mischievous smile.
“I loved risking my life. If I had to do it again, I’d do it in a second.”
He’s so unpredictable.
“Funny how your lighter ended up being useful.”
“I know that thing can always come in handy.”
“I admit I understand better now how you became the only woman in your gang.”
“You underestimated me.”
“Your acting skills are real.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“People always thought I was weak because of how I look. I just took advantage of it.”
“I feel like you hide as many secrets as you do tricks up your

sleeve.”
He let out a laugh that sounded fake while watching me carefully. I gave a smile as sly as his. We both knew we were liars to the core.
I will never trust that man. Not ever. Especially not now.
“The end of this trip marks the end of a very fine criminal partnership.”
Between him and me, he is the real criminal.
“I forgot. You’re not a criminal.”
I looked at him, intrigued.
“You‘
