That evening, I received a call from Eleanor. She was sobbing hysterically over the phone. “Skylar, hurry to the hospital! Leo slit his wrists and is in the emergency room right
now! Please come quickly…”
I paused for a moment, then refused. “I’m quite busy with work lately. I don’t have much time. You all can take good care of him at the hospital.”
“How can you say that?!” Eleanor exploded in rage. “Leo is your husband! He’s fighting for his life right now. How can you abandon him?! Besides, if you hadn’t publicly humiliated Leo at his father’s birthday party, why would he be so distraught as to try and kill himself?!”
I replied calmly, “His suicide attempt wasn’t my doing. Besides, our relationship is broken. I already filed for divorce. Whether he lives or dies, it has nothing to do with me anymore.”
“Skylar, have you no conscience?! Leo was your husband, for better or worse! Are you
truly so heartless?!”

I didn’t want to argue with her any further and simply hung up.
I continued to focus on my work handover and preparations for moving abroad. I didn’t go to the hospital to see Leo. But I knew he wouldn’t die. He was just trying to manipulate me into changing my mind. But by now, my heart was dead. I would never go back.
Three days later, I received a call from Leo.
“Skylar, I never thought you could be so cruel… Are you really dead set on cutting me out of your life completely?”
“Yes.”
After a long silence, he conceded. “Alright, I agree. Let’s get a divorce.”
“Good.” I let out a long breath. This broken marriage was finally coming to an end.
The divorce proceedings between Leo and me went smoothly. He got the house and car, and I got all the savings. At that moment, I was suddenly grateful we hadn’t had children, which reduced a lot of potential complications.
As we left the courthouse, Leo tentatively asked, “Skylar, after we divorce, can we still be friends? When you have time, can you come back to the country and see me?”
“No need.” I firmly refused. “Leo, I hope we never cross paths again. Let’s never see each
other.”
Leo bit his lip hard, tears streaming down his face like a broken dam. “Skylar, I loved you
so much, why did I still lose you? I regret it so much, I truly regret it…”
I sighed, saying nothing more. I never doubted his sincerity, but while he loved me, he was also loving someone else. His love was cheap and fickle. I didn’t want it at all.
Shortly after the divorce, I officially embarked on my journey to Europe. The moment the plane took off, a dazzling light filled my eyes, like my brand new future. I was finally, completely saying goodbye to the past.
Six months later, I had fully settled into my life abroad. The branch office was running
smoothly, and I gradually got used to life in a new country. I immersed myself in work every day, rarely checking in on things back home.
Then, one day, a friend from back home called me. He told me that Chloe Meng was dead.
Apparently, not long after I left the country, Chloe was released on bail by her family. She went to find Leo again, clinging to him relentlessly, refusing to break up. But Leo completely ignored her, dead set on cutting ties with her. Heartbroken, Chloe started drinking heavily. One night, while drunk, she drove off to find Leo, but got into a severe car accident on the way.
She died horribly. Both her legs were shattered, her organs were crushed, and blood was everywhere.
Her death also served as a gruesome confirmation of the vow she’d once made to Leo: only death could truly separate them.
Listening to all this, my heart remained strangely calm. I had long since moved past the past. Whether they lived or died, it no longer concerned me. My future was bright and full of promise. I would never dwell on the past again.
