Scarlett lay in a pool of blood, her vision gradually blurring.
She watched Jackson holding Lily protectively in his arms as countless memories flashed through her mind-
Their first meeting, when his gaze was cold as ice behind those gold–rimmed glasses;
Their power struggles, when she poured salt in his coffee yet he drank it without flinching;
Their first time, when she bit his shoulder bloody from the pain;
How she fell deeper in love, decorating an entire villa for his birthday only to discover his scandal with Lily;
And that time she walked five miles to visit her mother’s grave, eyes red with tears, her heels leaving bloody blisters.
It was Jackson who found her, silently removing her destroyed shoes, carrying her piggyback style home.
Back then, her tears had soaked into his neck, and she’d thought: if we could walk through life like this, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.
After her mother died, someone was finally bringing her home again.
But in the end, all these images were replaced by Jackson shielding Lily in his arms.
‘Beep… beep… beep…”
The steady rhythm of medical equipment pulled Scarlett back to reality.
she slowly opened her eyes, hearing Lily’s tearful voice from the next room:
‘It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have argued with my sister in the middle of the road… I just wanted to drive her home… ackson, why did you save me first? She’ll be so angry when she finds out…”
ackson’s voice was gentle as he wiped away her tears: “It’s not your fault.”
His voice was impossibly tender–a tone Scarlett had never heard before.
‘If I had to do it again, I would still save you first,” he said softly. “Your health is fragile. You can’t risk another injury.”
After a pause, he added: “Besides, she has no reason to be angry.”
Scarlett’s chest suddenly constricted, as if an invisible hand had seized her heart and twisted cruelly.

Of course. Who was she to Jackson Blackwell? What right did she have to be angry? Who he saved was entirely his
choice.
“Stop crying and get some rest,” Jackson coaxed gently.
It took a long time for him to calm Lily down before she finally left.
When the door closed, Jackson turned around, only to realize Scarlett had been awake the entire time, silently watching him.
His face betrayed no guilt whatsoever as he calmly said: “You only have external injuries. Knowing how much you hate pain and care about your appearance, I brought in the best medical team. There won’t be any scarring.”
In the past, Scarlett would have thrown a tantrum, demanding to know why he saved Lily first.
But now, she simply replied evenly: “I see. Thank you. I’ll reimburse you for the medical expenses in two weeks.”
Jackson’s eyebrow quirked slightly, seemingly surprised by her gratitude.
And why did she keep mentioning “two weeks“?
But he didn’t press the issue, assuming it was just another of her passive–aggressive moods.
Over the next few days, Jackson surprisingly canceled all his work commitments to stay at the hospital and care for
her.
Strangely, Scarlett no longer clung to him or made trouble as she used to.
She quietly accepted treatment, quietly ate her meals, quietly slept–quiet to the point that it made him uneasy.
‘Still angry?” he finally asked while sitting with her during an IV drip.
‘About what?”
“That I didn’t save you that day.” He paused. “I saved Lily for good reason. She and I…”
Before Jackson could finish, a commotion erupted in the hallway.
‘What’s happening?” A young nurse rushed by.
‘Apparently the Devereaux CEO’s stepdaughter fell down the stairs,” another nurse whispered. “She was just brought to emergency. Mr. Devereaux looked devastated–carried her in himself. If you ask me, a man who treats his stepdaughter that well must be truly exceptional…”
Scarlett looked up at Jackson and immediately noticed his expression change.

“I have something to take care of,” he stood up, moving more hastily than usual. “I’ll come back to check on you later.”
Scarlett watched his retreating figure, knowing exactly where he was going.
She closed her eyes wearily, feeling like her heart had been hollowed out.
