Chapter 6
The wedding day arrived.
The castle stood majestically against rolling green lawns.
I wore a pristine white gown and made my entrance in a flower–adorned carriage.
The rhythmic clip–clop of hooves, the beautiful strains of music.
Chase stood on the lawn in his sharp tuxedo, eyes bright as he waited for me.
I took his hand as he helped me down from the carriage, and together we walked step by step toward the altar.
Petals drifted down, butterflies danced, applause thundered.
After the officiant’s opening remarks, Chase went off–script and professed his love to me for ten solid minutes.
I watched his trembling chin, his shaking hands.
By the end, his eyes were red and wet, his voice quavering.
He talked about the first time we met.
He talked about the day we made our relationship official.
He talked about all the tender moments we’d shared.
But all I could think about was what he’d said that night by the pool: “But expecting me to stay faithful just for her… I can’t do it.”
The moment tears rolled down my cheeks, Chase pulled me into his arms.
I could hear his heart pounding wildly in his chest.
He was incredibly nervous and incredibly happy.
I realized he did love me.
His vows were real.
So was his betrayal.
These two contradictory truths existed simultaneously.
The officiant announced an intermission.
The vow exchange had been moved to the evening ceremony.
This was different from what we’d rehearsed.

Chapter 6
Chase glanced at the officiant in surprise.
I tugged on his sleeve.
“That was my idea,” I whispered.
But when evening came, surrounded by flowers under dazzling lights, I looked into Chase’s eager eyes and said, “I don’t.”
The officiant was stunned. The guests were shocked.
The joy in Chase’s eyes was instantly replaced by bewilderment, then gradually transformed into fury.
He stared at me intently while I looked back at him calmly.
The eight o’clock bells chimed right on schedule. The overhead lights dimmed, and fireworks ignited over the distant lake.
Fireworks of every color and shape wove together, spreading across the night sky in brilliant beauty.
They scattered across the lake’s surface, ethereal as a dream.
I watched for a while, then unfastened my wedding train and gracefully stepped down from the altar.
The wedding I had carefully planned and crafted down to every last detail was finally over.
