Chapter 7
So, Julia had been faking her illness all along! I was stunned by this revelation.
Did Caleb know? Did he realize how his so–called innocent childhood sweetheart had
manipulated him?
I heard Julia say, “Alright, alright. I get it. There’s no need to rush me. I’ll get it done within a month. Caleb’s so easy to fool. Maeve, that bitch, is already breaking up with him. I’ll just swoop in when the time’s right. Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll secure the investment for our family.”
I quietly backed away with my phone in my hand.
As I listened to the recording of that conversation, I decided to wait before acting. I’d send
it to Erin after leaving Caldara.
I was about to leave after I completed my check–up when I ran into a familiar face at the hospital entrance.
Caleb was walking toward me, holding a lunchbox and a bag of fruit. His tone was accusatory as he asked, “Maeve, where have you been these past few days? You haven’t been home, and all your things are gone. Your temper is through the roof. This needs to
stop.”
I didn’t want to waste time talking to an idiot. So, I just gave him a sympathetic look. “I said we’re done. Do you think I’m just joking? Caleb, I’m telling you one last time. We’re
done. Go find Julia.”
With that, I walked past him, ready to leave.
Caleb tried to chase after me, but Julia called out to him, “Caleb, where are you going? I’ve been waiting for you forever. I’m starving!”
Caleb hesitated, but eventually, he turned and walked toward Julia.

Julia shot me a smug look. I rolled my eyes and turned to leave.

That night, Caleb drunkenly called me. He said he couldn’t find me and wanted us to talk.
“Maeve, are you really going to break up with me? I’m sorry. I’m going to marry Julia. She has cancer, and I can’t let her leave this world with regrets.”
I responded with a simple “Oh” and offered a heartfelt congratulations. “Well, congratulations on your wedding.”
Caleb reacted as though he were experiencing a complete mental breakdown. He yelled and screamed from the other end of the line. I wasn’t interested in hearing it anymore, so I ended the call.
I accepted the company’s request to work on poverty alleviation in a rural town.
Before I left, I sent the recording of the conversation from the hospital to Erin. It was my
way of repaying the help the Ford family had previously given me. After all, Julia had been after their money.
I didn’t know what happened after that.
The work in the village didn’t go smoothly, and my colleagues and I were almost stuck
there.
Three months had gone by before I finally got a break.
A friend sent me some updates.
Caleb never married Julia. On their wedding day, Erin exposed Julia’s fake illness. Caleb was furious and abandoned her. The Leclair family went bankrupt.
Their scandal made headlines, making Caleb the laughingstock of Caldara.
I couldn’t help but smile at the news.
One day, I planned to go into the city to purchase supplies. But as I was leaving, I saw Caleb standing outside, looking agitated.

My colleagues, seeing him, started teasing.
I was disgusted by the noise and seriously said, “I have nothing to do with him. I would
never like a man who cheats.”
My colleagues awkwardly left after that.
Caleb’s face tightened with discomfort as he slowly stepped forward.
“Maeve, I know you’re still angry at me. I get it. Come back to Caldara when you’ve calmed
down. I’ll have everything arranged for you.”
When I heard that, my expression darkened.
“Who gave you permission to meddle in my affairs? Caleb, I have nothing to do with you anymore. Do you realize how insufferable you
are?”
