Ethan drove me to my parents’ house. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice full of concern. “T’m fine,” I said, watching the city lights flash by.
“I just didn’t expect to see him.” “If you’re not comfortable, we can go back to Switzerland early.” “No,” I said, turning to him. “I’m not letting anyone —- change my plans.” Ethan smiled gently. “That’s why I love you.” He pulled up to my parents’ house, and I gave hima soft kiss on the cheek before getting out. The moment I opened the door, I froze. There was someone sitting in the living room. Damien. “Isla!” my mother said, standing up.

“You’re home.” I looked at Damien on the couch, my voice turning to ice. “What are you doing here?” “T let him in,” my father said. “He was waiting outside for a long time.” “Two hours,” my mother added. “He said he had something important to talk to you about.” I looked at Damien. “What is it?” He stood up, his eyes filled with a complicated mix of emotions. “It’s about what happened two years ago. “Isla,” my father called out. “Just hear what he has to say. For the last two years, he’s been… looking out for us. Secretly.” I turned back. “What?” “when your mother was sick, he arranged for the best healer. And your brother’s application to the wolf academy… he paid the tuition.” Istared at Damien. He was looking at the floor, not denying any of it. “Fine,” I said, sitting in the armchair. “What do you want to say?” My parents quietly left the room.
“You were the one who saved me five years ago,” he began. “You used your own life force to pull me back from death. But when I woke up, the first person I saw was Seraphina. So I thought… I thought it was her.” “go?” “So I made the biggest mistake of my life,” his voice —- started to tremble. “I betrayed the one person who truly loved me.” “T know saying sorry is useless,” he said, finally looking at me.
“I know I hurt you more than anyone should ever be hurt.” “Then what do you want?” Damien stared into my eyes, and I felt the faint thrum of our old bond trying to flicker to life. “Do we really have to be strangers?” His voice echoed directly in my mind. The familiar intimacy of it sent a jolt through me. But I immediately threw up my mental shields, cutting him off. “Yes,” I answered out loud, my voice cold. “We are strangers.” Damien looked at my hardened profile, his voice full of pain.
“Isn’t there anything I can do?” he whispered, his voice cracking. ”To earn… a second chance?”
