Chapter 12
“You bastard! Lay a hand on my wife again and I’ll break your legs and toss you in the river to feed the fish!”
Nathan Brooks sat on the ground, panting, but still staring at me with that obsessive gaze.
“Sophia, I don’t believe you don’t love me anymore. In our last life, you gave up everything for me. Even when I had illegitimate children, you forgave me. When I bought Chloe Summers a car and a house, you tolerated it. I’m ready now to devote myself to you completely–why are you being so heartless?”
As he spoke, tears slid down his cheeks, tracing a grimy line down his neck.
I looked at him coldly.
“Nathan, do you even deserve to say the words heartless? Last time, you married me, took my funding, then cozied up to Chloe for her fake tenderness and coquettishness. You even slept with the maid when you were drunk. Was humiliating me your idea of love?”
I bent down so I could stare straight into his eyes, spitting out each word.
“You and that whore of a mother of yours are both disgusting. You deserve nothing but hell. Every inch of ground you walk on reeks of filth.”
Hearing my venom, Nathan froze completely. He finally understood–I was never taking him
back.
He crawled toward me, clinging to the hem of my pants.
“Sophia, you can’t be this cruel to me. We’ve been married for thirty years–just help me one last time, please?”
I kicked him away and took Adrian Shaw’s arm, striding out.
Behind us, the bodyguards closed in. The sound of fists and flesh colliding echoed through the
room.
The next time I heard of Nathan, he was crippled and scavenging food from a trash bin. Apparently, my dear “uncle” had lost money gambling, came looking for him, and broke his legs.
Rumor had it Chloe really was sold off to an old, solitary man in a neighboring town. Because she’d had a miscarriage, the man only paid thirty thousand dollars–which my uncle managed to ose within two days.
While Auntie Huang was gossiping about it with me, Adrian came to pick me up.
smiled, looped my arm through his, and waved goodbye to Auntie Huang.
As we walked out, Adrian told me about all the delicious things he’d prepared for dinner. The setting sun cast a warm glow over his profile, filling me with a sense of peace and comfort.
leaned closer to his arm and said softly,
‘Honey, you’re so good to me.”
