I find myself in a shabby dressing room with several women in underwear or dressed in sexy outfits- police officers, nurses, or other costumes you’d find in a sex shop.
None of them pay any attention to me, even though they’ve never seen me before. They must be used to seeing new faces come and go.
The dressing room is set up with a few worn–out couches, several coat racks in flashy colors, and chairs placed in front of mirrors under which makeup is available.
“What are you waiting for to get dressed? You think someone’s going to bring you a stylist?”
A woman stands in front of me. She’s tall and dressed in a police outfit. I don’t respond to her snide remark. I slip into the short nurse’s dress that reveals my black thong and has such a plunging neckline that it shows the beginning of my cleavage.
Come on, Inara, you can do this.
I step onto the stage. The spotlights blind me while the screams and whistles from those hungry wolves, mixed with the music, give me a horrible headache.
I scan the room full of all kinds of men. My gaze meets the infamous Graves–the one Alexander pointed out when we left the car. I give him a slight wink and he nods in return.
He’s a man with olive–toned skin, early thirties, large dark brown eyes, a straight nose, and full–but blackened–lips, likely from all the substances he uses. He’s wearing a midnight blue tuxedo, a collector’s watch on his wrist, and designer shoes.
My eyes meet Alexander’s, seated a little farther from Graves.
I would’ve thought he’d be thrilled to see me dressed like this, but he looks more annoyed than anything else.
I take a deep breath and walk toward Graves with a lustful look to give him a private show. He watches me, pleasantly surprised.
Still, I keep a safe distance under his lustful gaze while he looks over every curve on my body.
I move sensually under his ecstatic gaze and the encouraging cheers from the other men. I turn around to give him a full view of my body and short dress. I use the opportunity to unclip my bra, even if he still can’t see my breasts.
If Maria could see me, she’d kill me on the spot.
I turn back around, wrapping my arms around my chest under his gaze full of desire.

He tries to touch me, but I shoot him a playful look to make it clear that it’s forbidden. To end my show, I lean in and place a soft kiss on his cheek as he smiles dreamily.
I move closer to Graves’s ear and whisper:
“Join me in the room upstairs in ten minutes.”
He nods, delighted. I head to the designated room, followed by applause from the clients–and surely by Alexander.
I settle into the room. I put my bra back on, then rummage through the drawers and find a pair of sweatpants and a black tank top, which I put on, even though it exposes my stomach.
There’s a knock at the door. I come face–to–face with an even angrier–than–usual Alexander who shoots daggers at me with his eyes.
“Was it really necessary to take off your bra?”
His voice is icy. What’s gotten into him now? He’s been sulking ever since earlier. He’s acting like a jealous man, but it must be wounded pride. I’m not going to start imagining things.
“I had to do a striptease–that’s what I did.”
He glares at me.
“You were supposed to dance, not strip!”
He grabs my wrist. I can feel all his anger.
“That was the first and last time you’ll ever do something like that–especially in front of me. Got it? If you do something like that again, I’ll kill you and all your bastard fans.”
I challenge him with my eyes.
“Threats?”
“In my world, threats don’t exist–only promises.”
“And what’s it got to do with you?”
He doesn’t even have time to answer because there’s a knock at the door. I grab him by the wrist and hide him in the large wardrobe, which I shut.
I open the door and Graves is standing there, alone; he’s vulnerable.
He gives me a sly smile and steps into the room, which I lock behind him.
“I knew you liked me the way you danced earlier.”
Idiot.
“Come on, baby, show me a good time.”

He starts lowering his pants when Alexander bursts out of the wardrobe, pointing a gun at him.
Graves yelps in surprise and quickly pulls his pants back up.
“Alexander Graves…”
“In the flesh.”
He gives a crooked smile. Of course–he loves dramatic entrances.
“It was a setup, wasn’t it?”
Now all his attention is on Alexander. I feel like I’m just in the way.
“Of course, and you fell right into it like an idiot.”
“What do you want?”
“Information.”
“The kind of info that could get me in trouble, huh?”
“We know someone recently bought poison from you–we want to know who.”
He clenches his jaw.
“A lot of people buy from me, you’ll have to be more specific.”

“We’re not talking about rat poison or some ten–euro stuff you sell to junkies or housewives trying to kill their husbands. We’re talking about a product that costs a fortune and is extremely rare.”
“Deep down, you know what we’re talking about–because you’re probably not used to having clients that rich,” I chime in to help a bit.
He thinks. Suddenly, he turns pale and looks at us in fear.
“Anything but that! I can’t tell you–otherwise, they’ll kill me!”
“If you don’t talk, I’ll be the one who kills you,” Alexander says.
“You don’t understand–they’ll go after my wife and kids!”
I roll my eyes.
“When you wanted to screw me, you were really thinking about them, huh?”
“I’m begging you, don’t force me! You don’t know who you’re messing with!”
What kind of person can terrify someone as bold and influential as Graves?
“If I talk, my fate is sealed!”

Alexander clenches his fists.
“I don’t have time to waste–tell me who bought the poison!”
“I can’t! They’ll kill me!”
“If you talk, I’ll make sure you’re protected!”
“Impossible! This person doesn’t fear death! Let me go, please!”

I look at Alexander, not knowing what to do. I don’t want to kill this man. He has nothing to do with this story–he’s just an errand boy.
Graves stares at us, then his eyes shift to the window, completely terrified. Alexander and I both turn our heads toward the window–and that’s when we see him.
A sniper dressed all in black, face covered with a balaclava, is posted on the rooftop across from us. Alexander has a red dot on his forehead–the sniper has a gun aimed at his head.
I jump on Alexander to pull him to the ground with me. I end up sprawled over him while he stares at me strangely, as if shocked, though it was just an instinct. I lift my head to look at the poison expert still standing. He’s walking toward the window with his hands raised. My eyes widen in confusion as I realize what he’s about to do.
I get up to stop him from doing something so stupid, but Alexander holds me back.
“He’s going to get himself killed!”
“If you get up, you’ll get your head blown off!”
He’s right.
I’m ready to die! Tell him I said nothing! No one must go after my family!” Graves shouts to the sniper to pass along the message.
A bullet pierces his stomach, and two others hit both of his legs.
As he collapses, he tells us:
“The two of you, you’ve got a real shot at winning this.”
A final bullet lodges right in the middle of his forehead.
Alexander grabs my head and presses it against his chest so I stay lying on him. My heart is beating abnormally fast, but I feel safe around him.
Who is this person so dangerous that a man would rather get riddled with bullets than reveal their identity?
We wait a good ten minutes and don’t hear a single sound.
I’m about to get up to check if the sniper has left, but Alexander stops me by grabbing my wrist. I look at

him, confused.
What are you doing?”
I’m checking if he’s gone.”
“If he’s still there, he might shoot you. I’ll do it.”
Since when does my survival matter more than his?
He gently pushes me aside and gets up to go to the window. He looks all around for the sniper and then signals that the coast is clear.
