I lay my head on the pillow, folding my arms behind my neck while staring at the ceiling.
I managed to kiss her.
I could have done it a long time ago, but I preferred to wait; tonight my impatience was at its peak. She didn’t push me away -she didn’t even try to.
She’s starting to let her guard down.
I smile like an idiot thinking about her face when I left through the window. She was frozen by the kiss we had just shared.

I’m curious about the value that piece of jewelry holds for her.

1 go downstairs to open the door. When I see who’s standing there, I let out a grunt of annoyance.

“It’s about what you asked me to do,”
1 sigh and sit on the couch.
He looks at me worriedly and sits beside me.
“I followed Hakim like you asked. He didn’t notice me.”
“What did you find out?”
I sent Aymen on a mission to keep a close eye on Hakim and gather as much intel as possible on him.
To take down Khalid and stop him from snooping in my business, I have to start by getting rid of his pawns.
“He made weapons deals with a few guys, pretty standard stuff. Then he went to a bar to meet a man.”
“What man?”
“I don’t know him. He didn’t look local, not even from France. It’s the first time I’ve seen this guy.”
“Maybe he was trying to make a deal with him.”
“I got closer and sat at a table behind them. It allowed me to hear part of their conversation.”
“Stop being mysterious–just tell me.”
“Hakim was talking with this guy about your pretty little doll.”
I raise my eyebrows and clench my jaw.
“He was talking about Inara?”
“Exactly
“From what I gathered, Hakim wants to teach Inara a lesson. She must’ve done something to piss him off.”
I knew that son of a bitch wanted to hurt her ever since he tried to rape her.
He’s targeting the daughter of his own boss–that fucking dog.
“What did the guy look like?”
“Dark skin, a scar covering half his face, a cut on the side of his lip shaped like a cross, tall, muscular, dark almond–shaped ryes‘
An unusual appearance. He’ll be easy to recognize.
“He has three teardrops tattooed under his right eye‘
Filled in or not?
“Two filled, the last one isn’t?
Getting filled teardrops means he committed two intentional murders. An empty one means the murder was accidental.
I’m not surprised Hakim turned to a killer to take care of Inara. He knows she has potential–she’s proved it more than once.

“Hakim either wants her killed or beaten up by this guy.”
“What makes you think he doesn’t just want her raped?”
I stare off into space, clenching my fists as I remember the night he barged into her room to try to force himself on her.
“If it’s rape, he’ll do it himself.”
“So he’s going after his boss’s daughter and one of his own?”
“He won’t hesitate. He doesn’t see her as part of their gang.”
“This guy’s a real piece of shit. She’s the only woman and he puts a hit on her.”
“I don’t know if she has what it takes to handle this guy.”
“You told me she managed to take care of Sergio, didn’t you?”
“She had the element of surprise to attack Sergio. But this time, she won’t see it coming.”
“What do you want to do? Warn her?”
“She won’t believe me. I’d also have to admit you followed Hakim, when I told her earlier that he was at the villa.”
“Why’d you lie?”
To see if she’d still let me come even while thinking he was there.
“For a stupid reason.”
“I heard their conversation. It wasn’t what you were looking for. Let it go.”
Aymen places his hand on my shoulder and stands up.
“I won’t let him touch her.”
He suddenly turns around.
“What did you just say?”
He looks at me, stunned.
“You heard me right. You know what I’m planning to do.”
“This could ruin all your plans if you get involved while you’re this close to your goal.”
“I can’t let Hakim hurt her. He’s already tried to rape her–I’m sure it wasn’t the first time.”
My blood brother sighs in frustration.
“You can’t or you won’t?”
“My reasons are my business.”
He clenches his fists and tightens his jaw.

I’m a master of lying
It’s second nature now.

“Stop laughing Fuck, you got me! I nearly fell over from how much you freaked me out!”
I burst out laughing.

“I really thought you were going to turn into Batman and save your little doll!”
I shoot him a mocking smile.
“You know damn well my favorite character in Batman is good old Joker.”
Joker dates Harley Quinn. Would be a shame if Inara became your Harley.”
I raise an eyebrow.
“You call that ‘dating? What Batman were you watching?”
“Anyway, that’s not the point.”
A debate about Joker and Harley Quinn at 3 a.m. wouldn’t have bothered me.
“So what are you really planning to do?”
“Fuck her and toss her like garbage. The plan hasn’t changed. It won’t change.”
“Are you going to warn her about what Hakim’s planning?”
I’m not her bodyguard, like you said earlier.
I’m getting doser to my goal–I managed to kiss her earlier without her trying to rip my tongue out.”

“You can’t play the knight in shining armor trying to save the damsel in distress! That’s not your job! She’s just as much an enemy as her father or Hakim!”
“I haven’t forgotten her place or her role in my plan.”
He growls in frustration, glaring at me.
“She knows how to defend herself better than half the men in their gang! She doesn’t need you getting involved–it could compromise you!”
“This time she does need it. I’ll help her. She doesn’t need to know.”
“You’re going to destroy everything you’ve been building for this woman? Do you realize she could find out everything if she starts digging?
Why you were in prison, that old bar you went to with her, killing Sergio…
All it would take is one piece of the puzzle and she could put it all together.”
“If she ever finds out the truth, I’ll kill her myself.
She means nothing–but she deserves a helping hand.”
“I’d rather see her dead if it means keeping your secret safe! Maybe Hakim just plans to rough her up. A few bruises and a broken rib won’t kill her.”
I don’t want a single scratch on her.
“I won’t let anyone lay a finger on her.”
His eyes widen.
“Don’t tell me you’re starting to develop real feelings for this woman, Alexander.”
I don’t answer.
He starts looking at me like I’ve lost my mind.
His face is so ridiculous it makes me laugh.
I planned to mess with him just enough to make him think I was bewitched.
“I’ve been screwing with you this whole time! You’re really an idiot!”
He exhales in relief and relaxes.
“I knew it wasn’t possible you were serious.”
“Still, you believed it. You really thought I had feelings for her, when I honestly couldn’t care less about her or what happens
to her.
I’ll admit–my acting skills are impressive.
You’d have to be stupid to think I’d throw away all my plans just to save this chick.
He probably thought I was about to go ask Inara’s father for her hand in marriage.

“He told me you had to meet him at this place today at 4 p.m., otherwise he’ll beat me every day until my body can’t take it anymore and I collapse for good.”

I let go of her forearm. I try to contain the rage that’s threatening to make me explode.
