Chapter 5
I went to class, did practice questions, hung out at the library, and sometimes took part–time jobs to earn pocket money.
The guaranteed spot for Grade 12 has already been set. As long as I keep my grades up, I can get into Midnight Pack next year.
My parents called twice.
Their tone was cautious, asking if I’d reconsider the business studies
program.
They said the Giorgio family was expanding into new industries, and Luna, with a business studies background, would be more suitable.
I hung up right away. They didn’t call again after that.
Helen, though, came to talk to me once.
That day after school, she stopped me at the school building entrance.
She wore a pink dress, her long hair down. Soft, pretty.
“Jeanice, can we talk?”
I froze. I didn’t know why she was looking for me.
But I nodded and followed her to the laurel tree by the track.
“Do you have a crush on Anderson?” she asked directly, eyes wary.
I blinked, confused. “Why are you asking that? I’m not even close to him. Did you hear some kind of rumor?”

“Then why are you always fighting him for first place? Why do you use his old methods in competitions? Why did you cut your hair and change your look?”
She fired off one question after another, voice full of hurt.
“You weren’t like this before. You never competed with anyone.”
That was when I got it.
In her eyes, everything I changed was for Anderson.
In my past life, that was true. Her instincts aren’t wrong–just the timeline
- is.
“Helen.”
I looked her in the eye and said seriously, “I’m doing all this for myself.
“I want to get into Midnight Pack, study aerospace with Professor Jeremy, and make my own money to pay off my family’s debts. None of this has anything to do with Anderson.”
She clearly didn’t believe me. She bit her lip and said, “Then why are you always avoiding him? Why don’t you talk to him?”
“Because there’s no need.”
I shrugged.
“We’re not from the same world, and we never will be. Relax. I’m not interested in Anderson.
“Besides, what’s wrong with avoiding him? If I never talk to him, there’s no way anything’s going to happen, right? Why are you so paranoid?”

I turned and left, never looking back.

She said something behind me, voice shaky like she was about to cry, but I didn’t hear it clearly–and didn’t want to.
Truth is, I felt a bit disappointed too.
I used to see Helen through rose–colored glasses.
After all, in my last life, even after Anderson married me, she was still his
beloved crush.
She always ranked top of the class, so I assumed she was smart too.
I didn’t expect her to be this petty.
Since then, she’s looked at me with a hint of hostility.
