“I’ll think about getting a divorce.”
“Lillian, can you trust me just this once? Give me a little time-I promise I’ll take care of it.”
Leonard’s voice carried a rare kind of resolve.
After a moment, Lillian slowly turned to face him, tear stains still on her cheeks. But her expression had
softened.
“Really? You’re not lying to me?”
“I’m not.”
Leonard reached out and gently wiped a tear from her face, his touch soft and deliberate.
Lillian looked at him in silence for a few seconds, then gave a slight nod.
Leonard tucked the blanket around her shoulders and whispered, “Get some rest. I’ll stay here with you.”
“Okay.”
She didn’t say anything else, just curled up beneath the covers.
Leonard sat at the edge of her bed, watching her as she drifted off to sleep, her breathing slow and even. His heart was tangled in a thousand different knots.
He stayed with her for nearly an hour, and once he was sure she had fallen into a deep sleep, he quietly
slipped out of the room.
The dim hospital hallway lights cast a tired glow over his face.
Instead of heading home, he drove straight back to his family’s house that same night.
When he stepped inside, the living room lights were still on.
His parents were sitting on the couch, faces grim-they had clearly been waiting for him.
As soon as he entered, his mother spoke first, her voice tight with anger.
“Leonard, so you do remember where home is? Where’s Evelyn? You just left her at the house like she’s nothing-what kind of husband does that?”
Leonard paused as he changed his shoes. Then he stood tall, his expression cold and unreadable.
“I came back to talk about Lillian. I’ve made a decision. I’m going to divorce Evelyn and marry Lillian.”
“Talk about what?” His father slammed his cup onto the table with a dull thud.

“That woman is trouble-always has been. If not for her, Evelyn would’ve never suffered like this. Leonard, I’m telling you now: this marriage will never happen. Your mother and I won’t approve.”
“She’s the woman I love.”
Leonard’s tone was calm, but there was steel beneath it. “What happened the other day was on you. You had no right to confront her directly like that-”
“What did we even say to her?”His mother cut him off, voice rising.
“A few harsh words and she runs off to throw herself into a river? Now she’s in the hospital and you’re falling for her act! Can’t you see what she’s doing? She’s manipulating you!”
“She’s not like that.”
“Oh? So Evelyn is that kind of person now?”
His father shot to his feet, pointing a trembling finger at him.
“You believed Lillian over Evelyn-that she’d steal and try to hurt her? Leonard, think about it. After all these years, has Evelyn ever done anything but treat you and this family right? Does she look like someone who’d do that?”
Leonard’s brows tightened.
“But the evidence-Lillian’s missing necklace was found in Evelyn’s room. And if Evelyn hadn’t set her up, Lillian wouldn’t have gotten hurt-”
“That necklace-Lillian probably planted it herself! A woman like her is capable of anything!”
Evelyn’s father looked unconvinced. “After all these years of marriage, don’t you know what kind of person Evelyn is? She’s honest, kind, and would never do something so cruel.”
“Leonard, have you completely lost your mind?”
His father’s words struck him like stones, disturbing the calm surface of his thoughts.
He wanted to argue-but images of Evelyn kept surfacing in his mind.
He remembered how gentle she had always been, never once complaining even when he treated her coldly after their arranged marriage.
He remembered that winter he fell sick-how she stayed up all night caring for him without a single complaint.
No one in the base housing ever had a bad word to say about her. From the elderly to the kids, everyone Evelyn.

He remembered the man who had confessed-claimed Evelyn ordered him to do it.
“Dad, you just hate Lillian. You’re defending Evelyn because you’ve never liked her.”
Leonard’s voice grew colder, a flicker of frustration creeping in.
“We’re not taking sides-we’re just being fair,” Evelyn’s mother sighed, disappointment in her eyes.
“Leonard, you keep saying you love Lillian, but do you really know her? Do you know what she’s thinking? What you see might not be the truth.”
“How can you say I don’t know her?” he snapped.
